‘Eppie’s Great Race’ Hosting Third Annual Kaiser Permanente Kids Duathlon July 19, 2008

What is a Duathlon?
A Duathlon is an event that combines two activities, most commonly running and cycling. Training for and competing in duathlons has become a popular way to achieve overall fitness, as a Duathlon requires more training, and makes use of more muscles, than if only training for one of these activities.

What is Eppie's Great Race®?
Eppie's Great Race® is a triathlon (incorporating three elements - running, cycling, and paddling) that is held annually along the scenic American River Parkway. It was founded in 1974 by Sacramento area restaurateur/entrepreneur Eppie Johnson and has been held every year since, making it the "World's Oldest Triathlon."™ Eppie’s Great Race is a Sacramento-area summertime tradition for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, families and individuals of all ages and skill levels. Its primary beneficiary is Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreation Services (which provides programs for Sacramento County’s mentally- and physically-challenged); over the years, Eppie’s Great Race has raised over $900,000 for this organization.

The Third Annual KAISER PERMANENTE KIDS DUATHLON
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kaiser Permanente, Eppie's Great Race® presents the third annual “Kaiser Permanente Kids Duathlon.” This new event's primary goal is to demonstrate to young people that healthy outdoor activities are fun, exciting, and rewarding, while in turn helping them to improve their fitness and overall health. As Eppie's Great Race® is a popular event for adults and families, the Kaiser Permanente Kids Duathlon will provide children with their own event on the same day. Children may compete in the Duathlon as teams or individuals, while other family members and friends are tackling Eppie's Great Race. Also, with the introduction of this Duathlon, children will be encouraged to continue competing into adulthood, graduating from the Duathlon to competing in Eppie’s Great Race after the age of 17 years.
