Cyrus Abhar, Public Works Director for the City of Rancho Cordova, has been named the 2010 Manager of the Year: Engineering and Technology by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento chapter. Abhar has headed Rancho Cordova’s public works department since the City incorporated seven years ago. Under his leadership, the City has secured more than $40 million in grants for public works program. He served as a member of the Highway 50 Corridor Partnership. The partnership, whose primary objective is to develop a coordinated transportation plan for the corridor area, received the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) “Salutes!” award in 2006. Written by members of his Public Works Department staff, Abhar’s APWA nomination noted that despite the volatile economy “no employees have been laid off and employee morale and satisfaction rate is very high”. A registered professional and traffic engineer and a licensed land surveyor, Abhar has more than 27 years of experience in civil engineering, public works administration, and business management. He is a member of the Capital Southeast Connector’s Agency Staff Advisory Committee, the Sacramento Central Groundwater Authority board of directors, and the American Public Works Association, Institute of Transportation Engineers. The APWA is an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies, and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services.
