Creative Remedies to Nab Gnats

If you really want to catch gnats, which are really just small flies, pour apple cider vinegar into shallow bowls.

(NewsUSA) - The saying "You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar" works better as a metaphor for human interactions than sage pest control advice -- it turns out that gnats, at least, love vinegar.

In fact, apple cider vinegar is often used in homemade anti-gnat concoctions. In one popular method, homeowners set out bowls of apple cider vinegar around their homes. The gnats try to get to the vinegar, only to drown themselves in the bowls. Some people mix dish detergent or baking soda with the apple cider vinegar, so any gnat that imbibes the liquid dies. Watching potted plants for fungus and quickly throwing out rotting fruit and trash can also help keep gnats from the home.

Controlling gnats outside is a bit harder. Citronella candles can produce a smell that repels gnats. You can also switch all outdoor lighting to low-pressure sodium lighting, which emits an orange glow that gnats dislike. Fine mesh fiberglass screens can help keep porches and decks free of the annoying insects.

But you cannot surround the whole world with screens. Eventually, you'll have to face gnats outdoors, in an environment that you cannot control. And that's when you should turn to -- a liquid pain reliever?

The marketers of Absorbine Jr. Pain Relieving Liquid often hear from people who use the product on themselves to deter gnats from swarming and biting. It's believed that the liquid's unique scent, which comes from natural menthol, absinthium oil, wormwood oil and other herbal ingredients, helps drive gnats away. Even employees of supermarts and drugstores that sell it are seeing the benefits.

"After watching Absorbine Jr. fly off the shelves, I decided to try it myself and was amazed. I don't know what makes the product so effective, but the swarming gnats left me alone," said Susan Shinn Bussell, general merchandise/drug manager at the Schnuck's supermarket in Bettendorf, Iowa.

So, there you have it -- if you want to catch more flies, use vinegar. If you want to repel them, use a product designed to relieve aches and pains. After all, aren't gnats really just another pain in the neck?
