Local journalists will moderate Candidate Forum on transportation and transit

Oct 07, 2022 12:00AM ● By SMART News Release

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Nonpartisan nonprofit Sacramento Metro Advocates for Rail and Transit (SMART) will hold a transit- and climate change-focused candidate forum Mon. Oct. 17, 5:30-8:15 pm, at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria downtown.

Candidates for all open Sacramento City Council seats and Sacramento County Board of Supervisors D5 will participate. Journalists from Capital Public Radio, KCRA, The Sacramento Bee and The Sacramento Observer will moderate.

We hope you will attend in person, or watch the live stream or recording. If journalists wish to attend for only one or a portion of the panels, that’s fine. For your convenience, we are including the forum schedule at the bottom of this email, with the caveat that exact panel start times may vary.

Transportation is central to how we live our lives. It comprises a major living expense for most people, and lack of public transit reduces access to things like jobs, school, medical care, and social services. Meanwhile, gas-powered vehicles are the top contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in Sacramento.

We need less traffic on our roads — and in its place, we need cleaner, more affordable, and more equitable solutions to transportation. But how? The candidates at this forum will have critical power over whether Sacramento invests in safe, affordable and low-emission transportation like mass transit.

Thank you to the American Public Transportation Association, whose grant made this forum possible.
