CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) -
In 2026, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary, a milestone that reflects its enduring role as one of the region’s most cherished places for nature connection, environmental learning and cultural storytelling.

Established in 1976 and named for educator and conservation advocate Effie Yeaw, the Nature Center has spent five decades inspiring curiosity, nurturing stewardship and welcoming people of all ages to explore the natural and cultural history of the American River Parkway. Effie Yeaw’s legacy, grounded in teaching, conservation and advocacy, continues to guide the center’s mission.

“Reaching this anniversary is both a celebration and a responsibility,” said Greg Dewey, President of the Board of Directors of the American River Natural History Association (ARNHA), the nonprofit that manages the Nature Center.

Dewey said, “The Effie Yeaw Nature Center has been a place of learning and inspiration for generations. As we look to the next 50 years, our focus is on strengthening the Nature Center, so it continues to thrive as a community treasure.”

Over the last half-century, Effie Yeaw Nature Center has welcomed hundreds of thousands of children, families, educators and visitors to experience the region’s wildlife, oak woodlands, riparian habitats and the living cultural heritage of the Nisenan and others connected to this land. Its school programs, camps, community events and interpretive trails continue to play a vital role in fostering environmental literacy and appreciation.

“This milestone honors the volunteers, donors, educators and community partners who have shaped Effie Yeaw Nature Center over the last 50 years,” said Rachael Cowan, interim executive director.

“Their dedication built a strong foundation – one that will continue to support the center’s growth in the years ahead.”

The 50th anniversary year will be united under the theme: “50 Years of Wonder: Celebrating the stories that unite people, place, and the natural world.”

Community members are invited to take part in the anniversary year by rediscovering the trails, wildlife and cultural stories that make the Effie Yeaw Nature Center unique – and by sharing their own “Moments of Magic” from visits and experiences now or throughout the decades.

Whether it’s spotting wildlife, learning something new or enjoying a quiet moment under the oaks, post photos or reflections using #EYNC50. Select stories and images may be featured throughout 2026.

American River Natural History Association also welcomes the wider Sacramento community to join the celebration through membership, volunteering, charitable giving or simply spending time in the Nature Study Area.

“For 50 years, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center has shown what is possible when a community comes together to care for its land, history, and future generations,” Dewey said. “This anniversary celebrates that legacy – and invites all of us to help shape what comes next.”
